IIn March 2000, I dared to visit
Milan. It was still cold in spring.
But while travelling, acquaintance with whom I went got sick and was hospitalized because he might have cerebral infarction. I stayed in Rome for 20 days
Following is the excerpt from the letter I sent to a woman who took care of us.
I recollected the tour in a room of the hotel and wrote the letter.
The answer No.1
I happened to have the opportunity to talk about the mural painted by Leonard da Vinci in the waiting room of the small hospital and felt that opportunity relieved a week’s mental strain a little bit.
I will write down the impression and conclusion I got from this tour in short.
First of all, every picture painted by Leonard da Vinci has an eerie atmosphere, and every painter always find himself in the picture he had painted..
The man who is in the place where the edge of the knife is directed is St. Andrew. St. Andrew is good tempered, calm and peevish person, and Leonard da Vinci ‘s personality has the most resemblance with St. Andrew. It goes without saying that the theme, The last supper, has a message. There might be a hidden message like fable that people live in the world full of danger.
On the contrary, the picture without dangerous situation might be an unsatisfactory mere illustration for Leonard da Vinci .
Jesus said that I would tell you that one of you who dined with me would betray me. All the men was flabbergasted. It should no have happened. It was horrible.
At first St. Peter paid attention to his younger brother St. Andrew. Is it you?
Unexpectedly St. Andrew was surprised to find that the edge of the knife is pointed at him. St. Peter turned back and put his left hand on the shoulder of St. John, and told him to ask Jesus who it was. It was natural for St. Peter with his twisted body to turn his right hand toward the back of Judas as if he suggested what Jesus said.
But the edge of the knife was pointed to Leonard da Vinci who showed cynical attitude to religion. And I think it was Leonard da Vinci’s psychological reaction to the pressure of painting awesome and great theme that he wanted to express
We started the tour from Milan and visited Florence, Assisi, Rome. Itinerary was planed to visit the places where the Saints got angry.
As the health condition of my senior colleague whom I asked to participate in the tour with me got worse, I felt as if St. Peter’s right, the curse edge of knife was pointed toward me because I felt the responsibility that if I had not asked him to join the tour, he would not have had this predicament. And I also feared that this would ruin the happy atmosphere of 34 people who participated the tour. I also had anxiety that he might break down at any time.
And in the motor coach from Florence to Assisi, I saw the scenery of countryside, with the mist cleared away. I realized that this was my authoritative answer
  which I had with experience.
When we arrived in Rome, The crises turned into the door to good luck.
As I told everyone about my colleague’s health condition. He was protected and helped by everybody. I had valuable experience and spent my holiday in Rome. I passed through the door of atonement in St. Peter’s cathedral twicewhich opens once in 25 years. I’m now relaxed and spend time in hotel.
The forgotten knife might be jest unique to Italian.
I would be happy if this would be an issue to deal with and be a good information for you. Because you major in Italian history of art
When you come back to Japan, please be sure to visit Otsuka International Art Gallery I told you before.
I hope and pray that you will flourish and be happy hereafter.
